Best way to Have a Blackhawk jack part made
I was given a 1940's Blackhawk S4 4 ton jack. The jack has a over lapped repair on the piece the handle attaches to (yoke?). I could live with it the way it is, but would rather find someone to make the new part. Who should I look at to make this part? I'll post an actual pic after work, but this pic will give an idea of the part. The yoke piece attaches the the frame area/handle.

The part is going to cost more to make new than to buy another blackhawk jack. I'd either live with the repair or post some pictures and someone can probably help you hide the repair. A good repair will be substantially cheaper, visually acceptable and just as good as new.

I have what appears to be the same jack that I have not yet begun to restore. I have been wondering what the key in the handle does. Any ideas? Good luck finding your part I do love the old iron.

Locks the twist knob, do you have a light?Originally Posted by bridgedogI have what appears to be the same jack that I have not yet begun to restore. I have been wondering what the key in the handle does. Any ideas? Good luck finding your part I do love the old iron. - Hot Rolled

Yes I have a light. The plastic is almost gone. As I haven't done much but unload it yet I thought it might control the light. So is there batteries under the cover? How does the light turn on and off. I guess I need to get going on it now my interest is back up. The only damage showing on mine is the cover with the ribs was cracked and welded back up. The welding looked good so with a little cleanup and some composite cosmetics it will look good as new.

I think the handle has a momentary switch that runs to the hydrualic cover. I'll post some pics later. Wish I had the light option.Originally Posted by bridgedogYes I have a light. Find one that doesn't need that particular piece and make one good jack from the two of them. You're talking about machining a piece that will cost more than buying another jack.Originally Posted by Shawn GhormleyMost of these older jack come with some sort of repair issue, hence wanting to fix the one I have.
Or show us detailed pictures of your jack and someone can tell you how to fix it that will be both visually appealing and strong. But machining a new piece from bar-stock is going to be *very* expensive. - Cast Iron

Based on that picture it looks like a weld repair on the right hand side of the casting? If so, the best you're going to do is find someone skilled who can re-contour it to the original shape. If it bothers you, then your most cost effective solution is to find a parts jack.

I am glad you posted this as I now have many leads after googling the model number. I just looked at a couple of sites and no one has the same opinion on the light. It is a very cool looking old jack which is why I bought it when I saw it. Another project on my list for retirement which isn't coming soon enough.

I will take some this weekend when I get home. I think I would take yours apart and repeat the repair properly and use the same cosmetics I am going to use. There is a lot of meat on there it should be plenty to hold it for general use. I have a picture somewhere I will post if I can find it. It is an old blackhawk jack under the broken axle on my dads trailer being walked into a shop circa 1957 on a trip across country we were taking. We were in his 55 Nomad with a single wheel trailer that I have never seen the likes of since,. Dam I wish I had that now!

Yeah, that's pretty ugly, you're going to struggle to fix that :-). Might get it roughly resembling the original shape with a LOT of careful blending (but might also compromise integrity of repair). You could machine one without the large radii's that would be functional, but not the original shape (would heavily detract from the aesthetics of the jack).Originally Posted by Shawn GhormleyA pic from the shop; I guess I need to brush up on my investment casting process.
I'd start looking for a parts jack. - Stainless

Shawn: Does anyone in your neck of the woods do work on them If not, there is a shop in Evansville, Indiana on Fulton avenue that does only that. They have been at it for years and are nice guys to boot. If you can't find their number, let me know and I will get it for you. They have been rebuilding this stuff for years. You may be able to get this part from them. I have no connection to them ,but have done a little business with them and was well treated. Good luck.

Bill D
Thanks for the link. That sure brought back some memories. I will say I would like to have the Nomad back not the trailer though.
